July 2nd 1937: Amelia Earhart disappears On this day in 1937, the famed aviator Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan were last heard from before they disappeared. They made contact whilst flying over the Pacific Ocean in an attempt to make the first equatorial round-the-world flight. Soon after they went missing, a massive search operation was launched but to no avail. Her fate remains unknown to this day.
