Charging station in Wichita for electric cars.

Electric-car owners in downtown Wichita, ks now can now charge their cars at Westar Energy’s new charging station. The company is offering this service free of charge. The Westar Energy charging station is located at its office at 100 N. Broadway.

Operating an electric car is cheaper the electrical equivalent of a gallon of gas costs 90 cents and electrical motors tend to last longer. Electric cars have plenty of detractors but Electric-car owners will typically charge their cars overnight in their garage, rather than at a public charging station similar to gas stations. “That’s one of their big appeals, the convenience of filling up at home,” said Westar executive vice president Jim Ludwig. The Nissan Leaf and Ford Transit have ranges of about 80 to 90 miles on a full charge. However, electric cars and batteries are improving all the time. One day Electric cars might be main stream.
